Swiss Gear Alpen is ultra-light, 2L Hydration pack with many comfort features for the avid outdoorsmen. Includes an adjustable sternum strap, padded, contoured adjustable shoulder straps, 2 side mesh stash pockets and padded back panel with adjustable waist belt. The hydration system is 2 liter, tube and bite valve, a bladder sleeve with a cooling liner, and external fill front access that eliminates removing the entire bladder during refill.

And on the 31st day...Yeah. The day after I could no longer return this to Amazon, this piece of junk started falling apart. The strap that connects across your chest came unattached from the seam of the left shoulder strap with little effort. Day 31. It's as if it had a mind of it's own... I used it maybe six times on my long rides on my road bike, so trust me it wasn't worn hard or used roughly. I just carried my water in it. Ironic don't you think consisdering this is "Swiss Gear." Next time I'll just rent a St. Bernard with barrel of water hanging around it's neck...Did someone say you get what you pay for?

Pros:The pack looks good and is very comfortable. The belt and the chest strap make it sit well and prevent it from sliding all over on the run. The adjustable clips make it easy to manage the position of the hose. All the hardware is made from quality materials and fabric the pack is constructed from is durable and easy to clean.Cons:The bladder develops leaks in no time. The filling cap is small and doesn't close well. I had to replace it with a bladder from Camelback.There are no inside pockets and the flap does not seal the inside compartment. Anything you put in there may fall out.The side pockets are too small to hold anything larger then a candy bar.

This is nicely priced, but at the cost of quality. The pack itself is nicely made, however, the problem lies with the bladder/reservoir, which is the main component behind this product. It made my water taste like plastic. I purchased a Platypus Big Zip 2L at REI (better priced) to replace the original bladder. The Platypus is a little too big for the pack, so you can't fill it up to maximum capacity, but there's practically no taste in my water.A minor annoyance about the pack is the foil-type liner within the pack. Its purpose is to keep your bladder cool, but it creates too much friction when trying to slide the drinking tube through the shoulder strap and when sliding in a full-bladder in the pack. Good thing the Platypus has a wide-mouth for easy filling because it's best to install the bladder before filling. Sounds obvious, but this is my first hydration pack.The front easy-access flap (for easy filling with the original bladder) means that if you decide to place some small items inside the pack, they may easily fall out. It really is just a flap that covers the opening to the bladder-cap. I used it for bike riding today and nothing fell out, but I can see potential problems if you plan on using this for running or any activity that involves a lot of bodily movement (unlike bike riding because the body is relatively stationary). You can tighten the flap buckle, but I'd still be wary. There's also a mesh lining for the bladder and it's possible to switch the bladder and place your stuff inside the mesh compartment for more security. I haven't tried it, yet.Minor stuff: the pack looks a little better in person. Although, I prefer solid colors over the diamond pattern.On a good note, it has typical Swiss/Wengen quality. It feels solid and comfortable on my back. The fabric is nice. You can place the drinking tube through either left or right shoulder straps. It has a plethora of nice buckles. There's also a detachable key holder that clips on the inside compartment for quick and secure placement of your keys. However, because I had to buy a different bladder, I feel like I paid $25 just for the pack. I would not purchase this item again nor would I recommend this to my friends. If the plastic taste does not bother you, this would be a great buy.Although, this hydration pack is flawed, I would still recommend purchasing some sort of hydration pack. During my bike ride, it was more convenient and safer to drink from the hydration pack than reach down and tilt my head back for water consumption through a bottle. Also, I felt more hydrated than normal after my bike ride. Another plus: it'll pay for itself in the long run from saving the money required to buy those water-bottles.
