I've been using a standard Camelbak hydration pack for some time now. Decided to give this specialized pack a try primarily for supported rides and races.This is not a replacement for the standard Camelbak. It has no pockets for spares, pumps, food, money, etc. This is a specialty race oriented product designed to be worn as an undergarment with a jersey, though it could be worn without a jersey in warm weather.The Racebak is made up of a front zip vest with a built in pouch which holds a 70oz (max capacity) bladder. Overall construction is good as it should be for a $100 product. The fabric is a synthetic compression weave, and the fit is very snug as it must be to hold the water bladder snugly against the body. The water bladder (similar to but shorter than the standard Camelbak bladder) slips into a pocket sewn into the back of the vest between the shoulder blades. The fluid bladder cap is small and not as user friendly as the one on the standard CB. The mouth of the bladder is smaller but large enough. The pocket which holds the bladder consists of two overlapping flaps. The full bladder must be squeezed into the gap between the flaps. Because the bladder is a couple of inches thick when full, fitting it into the fabric pocket is awkward and I suspect the pulling and tugging will eventually damage the seams. Refilling during a race would be a hassle as the entire vest would probably need to be removed. Once the bladder is in the pocket, the drinking tube is threaded up over the shoulder and through a tie down loop on the front of the vest. This works fine, and the drinking tube is insulated which is a nice touch. A wire running along the drinking tube to hold it close to the mouth for hands free drinking would have been useful, but is not included. There is an insulated pad which fits in the pocket between the bladder and the body for cold weather use. It can be removed in warm weather to allow the presumably cold fluid to help with core body cooling, another nice touch... The most annoying flaw in my opinion is the design/location of the water bladder. With the bladder located between the shoulder blades the CG is high much like a standard Camelbak. Bouncing of the water bladder while pedaling hard is noticeable, particularly when the bladder is full at the start of a race. You can mitigate this by keeping your pedal strokes circular and smooth but I believe a thinner and wider bladder placed lower on the back would have made the Racerbak smoother and more comfortable to wear. Once some of the fluid is consumed the feel improves. I guess one could simple limit the amount of fluid to about 60-70 percent of the 70oz. published capacity and be reasonably happy. It is clearly safer and easier to use than bottles.Summary: A well made but imperfectly designed niche product. Useful if it works for your application....

I purchased this to get through a couple of 100 mile plus road rides. Great concept but needs improvement if they ever expect it to be adopted by road riders. The center of gravity is high between the shoulder blades and you look a little ridiculous with a large hump beneath your jersey. Both the look and feel are improved once you drink about a 1/3 of your fluid. From a convenience standpoint you can't beat having the bite valve close at hand. I found that I drank early and often with the Racebak. When using bottles I have a tendency to forget about them until at least 5 miles into a ride. With the Racebak I found myself drinking almost immediately.Although the bladder sits high between your shoulder blades it remains stable. The bladder fits snugly in it's pocket so there is barely any movement when you start moving. Again the feel improves as the fluid level is reduced.Refilling by yourself requires you to remove your jersey and the Racebak. During a recent century I gave my riding buddies the task of refilling for me. This only required a partial unzip of my jersey for them to access the fill cap. I'm sure they weren't thrilled but I didn't care, I stayed hydrated. The fill cap is wide so filling wasn't an issue and I found that 2 electrolyte drink tablets provided enough flavor for a full pack.I recommend riding with the supplied pad. I rode without it the first time and found that my body heated the fluid quickly. On 2 subsequent rides I used the pad and found the fluid stayed cooler for a longer period.I'm a big guy for a road rider (200 pounds)and found the XL very tight the first ride, it has stretched a little after 3 rides. If you weigh much more you may not be able to zip the vest.Purchase this if you lose a lot of fluids like I do, especially long rides on hot days. Skip it if you're worried about how you look. It helped me get through a couple of tough unsupported long rides, keeping me hydrated and on the road longer eliminating the need to stop. With 2 bottles and the Racebak's 3 bottle capacity you could easily ride 60-70 miles without stopping for fluids.

Great hydration pack for runners with a high sweat rate on long runs. A lot less bouncing than other camelbak models. My only complain is that the lining of the shirt is really thick and will scratch your back if you don't wear a base layer underneath. I would not use this product as a base layer. Otherwise, this is the best hydration solution I have found to date
