This is a GREAT product. I do a lot of big game hunting in the Rockies, frequently miles from a road. We've hauled animals out 4-5 miles since I was a teenager, with packs ranging from the typical old-school aluminum frame to lightweight plastic frame packs.When I bought this pack 4 years ago we had about a 3 mile hike out with an average-sized elk. I loved the way the pack distributed the weight. It was phenomenal. The only problem was that since I had the best pack I "got" to carry the most weight. That only happened that year - as soon as I got home I bought 3 more Kelty Cache Haulers to spread the wealth. Now we all carry the packs in and share the weight.Two years ago we knocked down a big elk and a smaller yearling about 3.5 miles from the road. Not wanting to make a second trip in for the rest of the meat, we loaded up both of them and hauled them out in one trip - all 4 quarters, both backstraps, the loins and stripped neck meat from both. Each of us carried 1 hind and 1 front quarter plus whatever else we could fit.Being a masochist I also decided to bring the hide out too. The load was huge . . . the heaviest I've ever had on my back. We made it to the truck and just took the packs off our backs and put them in the bed - still fully loaded. It was December and we were leaving the next day, so we just left the packs covered in the truck for the night. When we got back to town I weighed my pack - 120 lbs! I was shocked. I knew it was heavy, but had no clue it was THAT heavy. I'm 5'10" and 185 lbs and was 35 at the time. I'm fit and generally athletic. I had guessed the pack was about 100 lbs before weighing it.The pack is just amazing. Though I'm not advocating carrying out 120 lbs. in one trip (hide or not), this pack can do it without a problem. I will never haul another animal out without this pack. I'm planning a trip to AK for moose and will take it without a second thought. It's just that tough. The frame is solid, the fabric is rugged, the seams and stitching are stout. I cannot praise the construction of the pack enough. And the pack loads and carries like a dream. To be sure, a heavy pack is a heavy pack - there's no escaping that, but the padding on the shoulder and waist straps are very comfortable. The weight distribution is like none I've ever seen in another pack.Other than high-quality scopes for my rifles, buying these packs for the whole hunting party was the best investment I've ever made for hunting. I can't say enough about them. GREAT product, Kelty.

This is a great, super solid pack, built for far harder usage than most backpackers will ever subject it to. The shoulder straps aren't simply held on by little pins, they're part of a much stronger internal yoke that is part of the shoulder harness. The frame is much stronger than any external pack frame I've seen so far. The pack is removable into a convenient day pack, leaving the frame and padding separate with its own excellent shoulder straps attached. Thoughtfully designed from beginning to end. It's extremely comfortable, highly adjustable (the frame, not just the straps and belt) and made to last for generations. The only odd thing is the two small outside pockets on one side have vertical zippers which seem prone to opening and spilling, but I haven't tried them, this is just an assumption. A super tough, super versatile and capable backpack for serious work.

This is my second year with the Cache Hauler frame and pack. I am not a hunter of any type - I'm a trail hiker. The 3450 cu. in. pack is a little small. So, you'll need to define for yourself if it suits your needs. I've used it on 3 day thru-hikes with all the normal "stuff" and it was filled to capacity. But, like most external frame packs there are plenty of ways to lash off things to the outside of the pack and of course you have the top of the pack and the cache hauler frame shelf to assist if you decide you absolutely must take your full sized Weber grill with you. When you first pick this frame/bag combo up, you'll grunt. Light it ain't. But, once you've adjusted the frame to your liking I suggest filling the pack with 25 lbs. or so of gear and going for a nice, hour long walk. You'll then get it. You'll return feeling like you went for that walk but without a pack strapped to your back. The weight of the frame/pack/items is rendered meaningless with this setup. Plus, because it's an external frame you don't have to care how you pack it. Throw everything in and get on with life. The waist belt has no peer. It is the best out there - period. After wearing the cache hauler a few times every other pack you own (and you know you have a closet full) will feel like a downgrade. Your internal packs will be relegated to ski season or bushwhacking only. This will become your "go to" setup. I promise. Oh, there is a dedicate water bladder holder that holds the bladder sideways. It works. It will hold a full, 3L bladder but it's a tight (um, real tight) fit. There are no tube ejection ports or tube guides but running it up through the center of the spindrift collar, over the shoulder and attaching it to the sternum strap with a clip is the way to go. Absolutely recommended.
wow. i got this pack for backpacking but also wanted something that would hold up while hunting in the backcountry. this thing is exactly what i was looking for.
