Perfect Multi-Tasker
By A. Howard
There are a lot of cooking products out there geared towards backpackers but I've so far found this one to be the most intelligently designed and versatile. To start, it takes the place of a kettle, boiling just enough water for the average dehydrated meal (eaten out of the bag) and doubles as the perfect insulating mug for tea, hot chocolate or instant coffee afterwards. I don't know that I would recommend it for "Cooking" as its micro size might be a bit limiting but I have used it to cook rice and eggs when needed. A few other design features I liked (in no particular order): It's light, being made of triple anodized aluminum (Halulite) of sufficient gauge to provide it with ample strength. It has no need for a handle due to its size and the inclusion of the handy (or rather finger-thumb-y) potholder which can be stuck to the side of one's fuel canister via a tiny magnet while cooking (keeping it clean) or squashed underneath the canister inside of the pot when storing or packing. The insulating sleeve is also sturdily constructed but provides a surprising amount of thermal retention (though it's a little hard to get off the pot) and the lid (a thick silicone ring held around a polycarbonate plate) doubles nicely as the pot lit (flipped) or the mug top without any leaks or spills experienced. The only downside to using the Micro over my larger nesting pot set (the Pinnacle Duo) is that only the smallest of Iso fuel canisters can be nested inside of it (I've only found Gigapower or Jetboil to fit) and I must also carry my stove (a Pocket Rocket) separately, which I don't truly mind as its pot supports tend to get bent when I pack it inside of the Duo.) I found the Spork/Foon to be...well constructed - for what it is (a tool of emergency) and though I use aluminum flatware, I also bring one along (w/my tea/hot choc and coffee) for emergency eating situation.(no example handy) The Minimalist is thoroughly excellent though. I hope you get the chance to pick one up. Thanks for your time.

Very good product
By razorguy
The Minimalist is very lightweight, compact, and does the job exceedingly well. If you are looking to put a can of fuel inside of it, then the Jetboil 4oz canisters will fit inside. I have a Coleman Peak1 stove (from Walmart) and it will not fit inside with the canister. I am in the process of trying to find one that will fit inside for even better portability.Once you heat up the water in the pot and put the sleeve on it, it is a great hand warmer. It insulates extremely well so after you boil some water in it then it will stay hot for a very long time. I have taken it on a couple hiking trips and when I make tea in it I typically have to let it cool down for 10-15 minutes before it's even drinkable and it's still very hot then. The pot gripper is convenient, but a little hard to use if you are pouring water out of the pot with it. I find it easiest to use the pot gripper to lower it into the neoprene sleeve and then just pour it that way. The gripper puts your hand in an awkward position and you can burn your hand on the water you just boiled or if you are pouring into a freeze-dried meal bag, the steam (as I found out) can burn the back of your hand. Also, the lid is very nice. It provides a nice seal and the "sipper" side of it is a really nice feature. The downside is that's the side that is facing into the pot when boiling water so it gets very hot and is something else that you need to let cool down before you can drink from it.The "foon" is decent. Not something I would want to use as my sole utensil because it is a little flimsy. I carried it on my first hike with the kit, but opted to leave it at home for the others. I tried it out with a Mountain House Pro-Pak meal and it's a little too short so it was pretty much impossible to not touch the inside of the bag with your hands. It would probably work well if you are eating out of a can or the pot the kit comes with; but not so well with a bag.Overall, the pot and sleeve make this kit worth it to me. It seems very durable so it should last a long time. It has a couple of flaws with the pot gripper and foon, but it isn't a deal breaker. All in all I am happy with my purchase and will look to GSI for more products in the future.

Great solo hiking companion, definite recommendation!
By Travis
Definitely the best solo cook system I've used, by far. I would highly recommend this set for anyone not needing to prepare food for more than two people. It's lightweight, durable, cleans up easily, and comes with everything you need...aside from flame and food =P I've put this set through the rigors in the past few months since I bought it from Amazon and am thoroughly surprised at every aspect. I did manage to break the collapsible spork/foon this last outing. I didn't like it at first but with it's ability to pack inside the pot with my Trangia alcohol stove, pot holder, and small spice container; That lil thing grew on me and I'm semi upset at myself for breaking it. It was my own fault, I broke it while hastily cleaning it.
